Welcome to the webpage of Tourette Canada, Calgary Chapter. We are a local affiliate of Tourette Canada, dedicated to supporting individuals and families dealing with TS and TS+ in Calgary and area. Our local events are completely free of charge, and everyone is welcome.

Meetings & Special Events

Public Meetings

We generally conduct public information evenings once a year, usually in the fall. These meetings feature a presentation by a guest speaker, with discussion to follow. The location, unless otherwise specified, is the new Alberta Children’s Hospital in NW Calgary. Times are normally 7:30 – 9:00 pm.

Family Support Meetings

Approximately three or four times per year we hold informal support meetings for parents, relatives, caregivers, teachers, etc. dealing with Tourette Syndrome. These meetings are also held at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and are a great way to get to know others in the Calgary TS community. We also have supervised art activities and games for youth and children in an adjoining room.

Social Outings

Approximately twice per year we have social outings in the community for families dealing with Tourette Syndrome. Past outings have included trips to the Calgary Zoo, the Science Museum and Bowness Park.

Additional Information

Mailing List

We send out regular e-mails to our members to inform them of upcoming meetings and events. To have your e-mail address added to the Calgary Chapter’s mailing list, please send your name and e-mail address to calgary@tourette.ca.

Support Phone Line

Calgary Tourette Syndrome Clinic

The Calgary Tourette Syndrome Clinic is now seeing patients and accepting referrals. The clinic will offer consultation and continuing care for children and adults with Tourette Syndrome with or without comorbid disorders (e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). All patients will be accepted regardless of disease severity, and continuing care will be provided from childhood through adulthood. Patients will receive a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan for their Tourette Syndrome symptoms and comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. Plans are currently underway for a multidisciplinary assessment and treatment team, including neurology, psychiatry, clinical psychology, neuropsychology, and occupational therapy. The clinic will be a centre for epidemiologic and clinical research in Tourette Syndrome, and will offer access to the newest therapies for patients and families affected by this disorder.

Patients will be seen at the Child Development Centre adjacent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Referrals can be mailed or faxed to:

In-service Presentations

An in-service is an educational presentation about Tourette Syndrome that is often made at schools or for other community or professional groups. It covers some of the following topics:

  1. What is Tourette Syndrome (TS)?
  2. What is a Tic?
  3. Types of Tics
  4. Associated Disorders
  5. How can one best support or accommodate a person with TS?

The length of the in-service depends on the audience but usually 45 to 75 minutes is an approximate time.

All in-services are provided by certified providers, sanctioned and trained by Tourette Canada. They volunteer their time to educate professionals and members of the public and increase awareness of Tourette Syndrome and associated disorders. In-services can also be provided for students, with a slightly difference focus; i.e. more visuals, etc.

No fee is charged, however donations to Tourette Canada are always very welcome.

The Calgary Chapter has experienced and trained in-service providers that are available to make presentations for any group that is interested. If you would like to request an in-service, please contact Adrienne Hill.

If you would like to become an in-service provider, training and support will be provided free of charge.

For more information about upcoming training sessions, and becoming involved in this very rewarding effort, please contact:

 Edmonton Information Support Sessions

Parent Support Group

Our Parent Support Group runs each month from September to June.

Sessions take place at:
Jasper Place Library
6:30 – 8:30 pm
9010 – 156 Street
Edmonton

(Extra parking is available in the lot on the east side of the building)

Please check our website at www.tsedmonton.com for current session dates.

Our goal is to provide as much help and strategies as possible. We offer two support group styles:

Speaker: We host experts who provide you with specific information relating to TS and its associated conditions. Our speakers will present and answer questions for about 90 minutes and the final 30 minutes is used to have coffee and network with parents and chapter volunteers.

Round table: During our round table support groups, the group comes together to offer support to parents and share stories and ideas. This is an opportunity to ask questions and see what is working for families and what is not.

Open to all. No membership required.

Because of the sensitive nature of the discussions that occasionally occur, support groups are not open to children.

Adult Support Group

Our Adult Support Group runs each month all year long.

Sessions take place at:
Jasper Place Library
6:30 – 8:30 pm
9010 – 156 Street
Edmonton

(Extra parking is available in the lot on the east side of the building)

Please check our website at www.tsedmonton.com for current session dates.

This support group is hosted by an adult who has Tourette Syndrome (TS) and is designed to offer support to anyone 18+ with TS who would like to meet other people with TS. We share struggles and triumphs, offer success stories and ideas, all in a comfortable environment. You will find friendship and understanding in a group that knows how you feel. This is a chance to meet those who understand you better than anyone else! Bring your spouse with you too so that they can also learn about the world of TS!

This support group is drop-in style, meaning you can come and go anytime between 6:30 and 8:30 pm.

Open to all. No membership required.

Because of the sensitive nature of the discussions that occasionally occur, support groups are not open to children.

Executive Meetings

Executive meetings take place depending on the schedules of its members. We conduct our business in an open environment and welcome attendance.

Meetings & Special Events

Chapter meetings are held from September to June every 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7:30 – 9:00pm. We take a hiatus during the July-August summer period. We are still available to assist you during the summer. You can contact us by emailing us at info@tsottawa.com or leaving a message at 613-823-1471. We will get in touch with you shortly.

Meetings usually alternate between an invited speaker and discussion/support sessions, although discussion can precede and follow meetings for which there is an invited speaker.

Need to talk to someone? Need counselling?
Tourette Canada offers a number of way for adults to connect with one another, get one-on-one support, and learn more about their condition(s). As an adult with TS, you can connect with the Tourette community virtually via the
Online Forum. The Virtual Community Program also offers a number of services and supports that are designed to reduce social isolation and empower adults with Tourette Syndrome. Whether you’re interested in viewing an e-learning module on the workplace or meeting with a professional counsellor, the Virtual Community Program has you covered.

Are you affected with Tourette Syndrome and having trouble being understood at work? Are those around your child or teenager need a better understanding of Tourette Syndrome?
The Ottawa Chapter offers free in-service presentations for schools as well as for the workplace both in English and in French. If you are interested, please call Jill at 613-823-0675 or send an email at info@tsottawa.com.
