An anthem isn’t just any old song. It’s a particular composition that serves as a symbol for a distinct group. This composition has the power to unite us, energize us, give us hope and make us think. Today, we’re on the hunt for a Tourette Anthem. We’ve included some suggestions below, but we really want to hear from you! What is your Tourette Anthem? Tell us why down below.
You are not alone – Michael Jackson – The song title says it all, “You are not alone”. Remember that you or your child are not the only people in the world with Tourette Syndrome. Having TS means you are part of a special community, the Tourette community. This means that there are others out there who “get it”, who understand what you’re going through and want to help. It’s your job to get out there and meet them! Consider coming out to a Tourette Canada event, whether that is a local or virtual support group or the National Conference [hyperlink to Conference date on website]. Never forget that Tourette Canada and its dedicated volunteers are here to help.
Let it be – The Beatles – This famous song has a lot to do with receiving a TS diagnosis. When you find that out you or your son or daughter has TS, you whisper words of wisdom to yourself, you know what you do? You just, “Let it be”. When you are having a cloud day, there is always a light that will eventually come out and shine down on you. Think positively and let it be. Accepting your diagnosis is important. Remember symptoms tend to decrease with age.
Don’t stop Believing – Journey – Each of us have gifts and strengths. TS isn’t who we are or what we are, it’s a condition that we may or may not happen to have. Don’t let it define you. Don’t stop believing in yourself. If you feel this start to happen, give this song a listen. It’s a great confidence booster. Its upbeat rhythm will have you smiling in no time!
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger – Kelly Clarkson – Put TS in perspective. It’s not a terminal illness, it won’t kill you. Yes, it may hurt, whether the pain is physical from tics or emotional. Remember, facing adversity has a silver lining – it can help make you a stronger, more resilient person. Importantly, it can also help you to become a more empathetic individual. Next time you hear this song, stand a little taller because what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
Shake it off – Taylor Swift –This song has a lot going for it. It’s catchy, upbeat, fun, easy to dance to, and it has a great message. TS getting you down? Someone make fun your tic? Feeling upset about something? Heed the words of Taylor Swift and shake it off. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and do something fun, like doing your best silly dance while listening to this tune.
