Fort Smith’s Trek for Tourette event was a resounding success, raising more funds than any other participating community in Canada this year. The walk, organized over a month, collected just over $6,600 through fundraising and a raffle.
Co-organizer Treyton Bird was the top individual fundraiser, contributing over $1,700, while his family’s Team Bird ranked among the highest earners. Another local group, Team Allie, secured the second-highest team donation at nearly $2,000. The event saw 30+ participants, ranging from young children to seniors in their 80s.
Bird and fellow organizer Kim Bennett, both living with Tourette syndrome, spearheaded the return of Fort Smith’s Tourette walk after nearly a decade without one. At the event’s conclusion, a resident was so inspired they brought ice cream for everyone, highlighting the warmth and camaraderie of the gathering.
Bird emphasized that events like this help reduce stigma around Tourette syndrome, which is often misunderstood. The fundraiser supports Tourette Canada’s programming and online support groups, aiming to provide education and assistance for individuals with the condition.
